SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM (ROSS)

 
             
  FAMILY SELF-SUFFICIENCY (FSS)
  The West Palm Beach Housing Authority has a fully implemented Family Self Sufficiency Program. The program is designed to promote employment and increase savings among families on assisted housing programs, and ultimately helps them to become independent of welfare assistance and ultimately economically independent. The participants must sign a contract, and a service plan and individual training is developed for each participant. The Authority assists families gain additional education, help individuals purchase a home, as well as job search assistance. Since year 2000, five FSS participants became home owners in the City of West Palm Beach.

  The senior population of the West Palm Beach Housing Authority is a vital part of the community and the WPBHA provides regularly scheduled oversight of all elderly residents. The authority presently has an Elder Care Services Manager and an Elderly Services Coordinator on staff. There are on-going activities for seniors such as concerts, museum trips, lectures, language classes, congregate meal programs and translation services. There are also special social activities such as the annual Valentines Day Party, and holiday festivities.  
  CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER  
       
  The career development center assists residents in the Self-Sufficiency process by providing an accessible, supportive environment. The center is equipped with fifteen state of the art, wireless, high-speed computers with internet access. Presently, the center has GED classes, taught by an instructor provided by the Palm Beach County School District. The Center also provides basic Job Readiness, Entrepreneurial training, Internet Literacy, Word and Excel training, and assistance with resume preparation
 
 
 
                   
                     
   
                             
  RESIDENT OPPORTUNITIES & SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM (ROSS)
                               
 

The West Palm Beach Housing Authority received a ROSS grant in FY 2008. The ROSS grant funds programs that provide for the delivery and coordination of supportive services and other activities designed to help public housing residents attain self-sufficiency. Services for the ROSS Grant are currently being provided through the Career Development and Computer Training Center located in Dunbar Village. The program is currently being managed by the Florida Resource Center for Women and Children, (FRCWC) an agency that has an ongoing partnership with the West Palm Beach Housing Authority. Services offered include the following: Computer Training (Word, Excel, Power Point) Job/Education Training, Life Skills classes, Literacy training, Financial Readiness and Home Ownership Preparation classes. The ROSS program is currently actively recruiting participants. Interested residents should contact FRCWC at 848-8383 or 561-366-8572
